SENIOR PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

The PGCOS Senior Peer Support Program is based on principles and self-help and empowerment and these values:

  • We believe that having someone to express feelings to helps gain clarity and make decisions.
  • We believe that people prefer to talk to those who share similar life experience, values and wisdom.
  • We believe that although people cannot change inevitable circumstances, they have choices in their reactions.
  • We believe that an individual can become better aware of the meaning of life events and make positive choices in daily living. The PGCOS Senior Peer Support Program is a FREE and CONFIDENTIAL one-on-one service provided by volunteers.Volunteers are compassionate individuals over the age of 55 who have been trained to provide non-judgmental emotional support to promote wellness and reduce social isolation. Volunteers are supervised by a Program Coordinator and observe ethical standards of conduct.

Referrals to the Senior Peer Support Program can be made by a phone call to the PGCOS Program Coordinator at 250 564 5888 Extension 12. When a senior is matched with a Senior Peer Support Program Volunteer, he or she will meet with that volunteer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours a week for a limited number of weeks. The volunteer will provide compassionate listening, non-judgmental support, and encouragement to help the client get more in touch with their own feelings, to gain a clearer understanding of their particular situations and difficulties, and to make decisions necessary to solve their own problems. The volunteer will respect the client’s confidentiality.

There is NO FEE for this service.
